Grade 2 › G2U10 Time & Duration

GRADE 2 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G2-2T1

L3 · Measuring duration in non-standard units; winter counts

Learning goal

“I can measure a duration by counting a unit that repeats - like one song or one clap beat - and I can tell what a winter count records: one picture for each winter.”

Measure — to find how much of something there is by counting units.
Unit — one repeat of the thing we count, like one song or one clap. A measuring unit must be the same each time.
Winter count — a First Nations record. One picture is added each winter to remember an important event of that winter.
Record — to keep information so it can be looked at later.
Worked example

We time hand-washing with our song. Step 1: The song starts when the water starts. The song is our unit. Step 2: We sing the song the same way, over and over, until the event ends. Step 3: We sang it 2 times. The duration of hand-washing is 2 songs. Say it plainly: to measure a duration, count how many units fit from the beginning of the event to the end.

Check yourself — explain it

Why must the song be sung the same way each time?

Paired problem — example still visible

Tidying took 4 songs. Eating a snack took 3 songs. Which took longer? -> Tidying (4 songs)

Faded completion — last step is yours
