L2 · Longer or shorter: comparing durations

Learning goal

“I can compare two durations and say which event took longer, which took shorter, or if they took about the same time - and I can tell how much longer.”

Duration — how long an event takes, from its beginning to its end.
Longer — a duration that takes more time. The event with the bigger count took longer.
Shorter — a duration that takes less time. The event with the smaller count took shorter.
About the same — two durations with equal counts, or nearly equal, took about the same time.
Worked example

We clap one steady beat while each event happens, and we count the claps. The song lasts 12 claps. The rhyme lasts 9 claps. Step 1: Both durations were counted in the same unit - claps. Step 2: Compare the counts: 12 is more than 9. Step 3: More claps means more time passed. The song took longer. Say it plainly: bigger count, longer duration - when the unit is the same.

Check yourself — explain it

Why do we count the same steady claps for both events?

Paired problem — example still visible

A dance lasts 15 claps. A cheer lasts 11 claps. Which lasts longer? -> The dance (15 claps)

Faded completion — last step is yours

"Event A lasts 6 claps. Event B lasts 10 claps. The longer event is ___." -> Event B
