L1 · Calendar dates and significant events

Learning goal

“I can read a calendar date - month, day, year - find events on a calendar, and tell which event comes first and how many days away an event is.”

Calendar — a chart that shows the days, weeks, and months of a year in order.
Date — the month, day, and year of one day. Example: September 15, 2026.
Month — one of the 12 parts of a year. September is the 9th month.
Event — something that happens on a day, like a birthday or a book fair.
Worked example

Read this date: September 15, 2026. Step 1: The month is September. September is the 9th month of the year. Step 2: The day is 15 - the 15th day of the month. Step 3: The year is 2026. Step 4: Find the weekday. The Tuesdays in September are 1, 8, 15, 22, 29. 15 is in the Tuesday list, so September 15, 2026 is a Tuesday. Say it plainly: a date has three parts - month, day, year - and the calendar tells us the weekday.

Check yourself — explain it

Why do we say the month first when we read a date?

Paired problem — example still visible

The Tuesdays are 1, 8, 15, 22, 29. What is the date of the third Tuesday? -> September 15

Faded completion — last step is yours

"The Mondays are 7, 14, 21, 28. The second Monday is September ___." -> 14
