L4 · Patterns in the hundred chart: clinic

Learning goal

“I can find and continue patterns in the hundred chart: across a row, down a column, and by skip counting.”

Hundred chart — a chart of the numbers 1 to 100, with 10 numbers in each row.
Row — a line of numbers going across the chart. Moving right in a row adds 1.
Column — a line of numbers going down the chart. Moving down in a column adds 10.
Skip counting — counting by the same step, like by 2s or by 10s, instead of by 1s.
Worked example

Look at one column of the hundred chart: 3, 13, 23, 33. Step 1 - THE CHART'S SHAPE: the chart has 10 numbers in each row, so the number right below 3 is 10 numbers later: 3 + 10 = 13. Step 2 - THE PATTERN: 3 -> 13 -> 23 -> 33 grows by +10 each step. Every number in the column ends in 3. Step 3 - USE IT: the number below 57 is 57 + 10 = 67. The number above 57 is 57 - 10 = 47. Say it plainly: down a column adds 10; up a column takes away 10; the ones digit never changes inside a column.

Check yourself — explain it

Why does moving down one row add exactly 10?

Paired problem — example still visible

What number is right below 26 in the chart? -> 36

Faded completion — last step is yours

"The number above 48 is 48 - 10 = ___." -> 38
