L3 · Repeating patterns: cores of up to four elements

Learning goal

“I can find the core of a repeating pattern - the smallest part that repeats - and I can use the core to continue the pattern, fill a gap, and build new patterns.”

Core — the smallest part of a repeating pattern. The core happens again and again to make the whole pattern.
Element — one single thing in a pattern: one bead, one shape, one clap.
Attribute — a way elements can differ: colour, shape, size, or sound.
Extend — to make a pattern longer by adding more repeats of its core.
Worked example

A necklace goes: triangle, circle, square, triangle, circle, square, triangle, circle, square. Step 1 - LOOK FOR THE SHORTEST PART THAT COMES BACK: "triangle" alone does not repeat by itself - after triangle comes circle, then square, then triangle again. Step 2 - TEST THE PART: triangle, circle, square. Lay it along the necklace: it matches, then matches again, then again. Step 3 - NAME THE CORE: the core is triangle, circle, square - 3 elements. Say it plainly: the core is the SMALLEST part that tiles the whole pattern with no leftovers and no changes.

Check yourself — explain it

Why is 'triangle' not the core of the necklace?

Paired problem — example still visible

Drums and bells: drum, bell, drum, bell, drum, bell. What is the core? -> drum, bell

Faded completion — last step is yours

"Pattern: moon, star, moon, star. The core is ___." -> moon, star
