L2 · Increasing patterns; patterns that decrease

Learning goal

“I can continue a pattern that increases by the same amount each time, and I can tell if a pattern increases or decreases.”

Increasing pattern — a pattern whose numbers get bigger by the same amount each time.
Decreasing pattern — a pattern whose numbers get smaller by the same amount each time.
Step — the amount a pattern grows or shrinks from one number to the next.
Continue — to write what comes next in a pattern, following its step.
Worked example

Towers of cubes on 4 days: Day 1: 4 cubes. Day 2: 6 cubes. Day 3: 8 cubes. Day 4: 10 cubes. Step 1 - FIND THE STEP: 4 -> 6 is +2. 6 -> 8 is +2. 8 -> 10 is +2. The step is +2, every time. Step 2 - NAME IT: the numbers get bigger by the same amount - this is an increasing pattern. Step 3 - CONTINUE: Day 5 is 10 + 2 = 12 cubes. Say it plainly: first find the step, then add it on. The step never changes inside one pattern.

Check yourself — explain it

Why must you check every jump, not just the first one?

Paired problem — example still visible

Numbers: 5, 15, 25, 35. What is the step, and what comes next? -> Step +10; next 45

Faded completion — last step is yours

"A pattern grows by 3: 2, 5, 8, ___. The step is ___, and the next number is ___." -> +3; 11
