Grade 2 › G2U09 Patterns

GRADE 2 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G2-2P1

L1 · Patterns in our surroundings: art, architecture, and nature

Learning goal

“I can find patterns around me - in art, in buildings, and in nature - and I can say what repeats or how the pattern changes.”

Pattern — something that repeats or changes in a regular way, so you can tell what comes next.
Repeat — to happen again in the same way. In a repeating pattern, the same part happens again and again.
Change — to become different. Some patterns do not repeat a part; they change a little each time, in a regular way.
Surroundings — the things all around you: your classroom, your home, your street, and the land outside.
Worked example

A bracelet is beaded like this: red, red, blue, red, red, blue, red, red, blue. Step 1 - LOOK FOR THE PART THAT COMES BACK: after blue, the beads start again with red, red. Step 2 - NAME THE REPEATING PART: red, red, blue. It happens 3 times. Step 3 - USE IT: you can tell the next bead without counting everything: after blue, the part starts again - red. Say it plainly: in a repeating pattern, one part happens again and again, always in the same order. Find that part, and you know what comes next.

Check yourself — explain it

How do you find the repeating part of a pattern?

Paired problem — example still visible

A fence goes: post, rail, post, rail, post, rail. What repeats? -> post, rail

Faded completion — last step is yours

"Tiles go: black, white, black, white. The repeating part is ___." -> black, white
