GRADE 2 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-MAT2-2G1
L5 · Slides, turns, and flips
Learning goal
“I can tell if a shape slid, turned, or flipped - and I know its sides and vertices do not change.”
Slide — a move straight across, up, or down. The shape does not turn.
Turn — a move that spins a shape around a point.
Flip — a move that turns a shape over, like a mirror image.
Attribute — a feature of a shape, like its sides or vertices. Attributes do not change when a shape moves.
Worked example
An arrow points up. It slides to the right. Step 1: A slide moves a shape without turning it. Step 2: The arrow still points up - only its place changed. Now the arrow turns a quarter turn (one corner of a square). Step 3: It points right now. Its place AND its pointing changed - but the arrow itself is the same shape.
Check yourself — explain it
After a slide or a turn, a shape's sides and vertices:
Paired problem — example still visible
A triangle has 3 vertices. The triangle slides down the page. How many vertices does it have now? -> 3 vertices
Faded completion — last step is yours
"A square turns. It still has ___ sides and ___ vertices." -> 4; 4
