GRADE 2 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-MAT2-2G1
L3 · The faces of 3D shapes are 2D shapes
Learning goal
“I can name the 2D shapes that make the faces of 3D shapes, and count the faces of a solid.”
Solid shape — a 3D shape you can hold, like a cube or a can.
Face — one flat surface of a solid shape.
Flat face — a face that can lie flat or stamp a print on paper.
Curved surface — a surface that bends or rolls; it is not a face.
Worked example
What 2D shapes are the faces of a cube? Step 1: Pick one face. It is flat, and it has 4 sides, all the same length. Step 2: A flat shape with 4 equal sides is a square. Step 3: Turn the cube any way you like - every face is the same: a cube has 6 faces, and all of them are squares. A box (rectangular prism) is the cube's cousin: 6 faces, and they are rectangles.
Check yourself — explain it
Every face of a cube is a square because:
Paired problem — example still visible
What 2D shape are the faces of a box (rectangular prism)? -> Rectangles
Faded completion — last step is yours
"A cube has ___ faces, and each face is a ___." -> 6; square
