L2 · Sorting shapes by two attributes

Learning goal

“I can sort shapes into groups using 2 attributes at once, and I can say the sorting rule.”

Sort — to put things into groups that follow a rule.
Attribute — a feature you can sort by: shape, size, colour, or number of sides.
Rule — the words that say what belongs in a group.
Group — the set of shapes that fit one rule.
Worked example

Sort these shapes into the group "big triangles": a big triangle, a small triangle, a big square. Step 1: The rule uses 2 attributes: size (big) and shape (triangle). A shape must pass BOTH checks to belong. Step 2: Big triangle: big - yes, triangle - yes - it belongs. Step 3: Small triangle fails size. Big square fails shape. Only the big triangle goes in the group.

Check yourself — explain it

A shape belongs in the group "big triangles" when it is:

Paired problem — example still visible

Does a small circle belong in the group "small circles"? -> Yes - it passes both checks: small, and a circle

Faded completion — last step is yours

"Group rule: 'red shapes with 4 sides.' A red square passes check 1 (red) and check 2 (___ sides)." -> 4
