GRADE 2 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-MAT2-2G1
L1 · Sides, vertices, faces, and surfaces
Learning goal
“I can count and name the sides and vertices of 2D shapes, and the faces and surfaces of 3D shapes.”
Side — one straight edge of a flat (2D) shape.
Vertex — a corner where 2 sides meet. (More than 1: vertices.)
Face — one flat surface of a solid (3D) shape.
Surface — any outside part of a solid: flat faces and curved parts are all surfaces.
Worked example
Count the sides and vertices of a pentagon. Step 1: Trace each straight side and count: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 - 5 sides. Step 2: Touch each corner where 2 sides meet: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 - 5 vertices. Step 3: A pentagon has 5 sides and 5 vertices. Flat shapes with straight sides have the same count of sides and vertices.
Check yourself — explain it
A vertex is:
Paired problem — example still visible
How many sides and vertices does a triangle have? -> 3 sides, 3 vertices
Faded completion — last step is yours
"A hexagon has ___ sides and ___ vertices." -> 6; 6
