Grade 1 › G1U14 Data: Ask, Gather, Show

GRADE 1 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G1-1ST1

L4 · From a concrete graph to a pictograph

Learning goal

“I can turn a concrete graph into a pictograph, and I can read a pictograph.”

Pictograph — a graph that uses pictures. Each picture stands for one answer.
Picture — a drawing that stands for one answer in a pictograph.
Title — the words at the top that tell what the graph shows.
Worked example

Our concrete graph shows juice 4, milk 6. Step 1: We draw the juice row. One picture for each block: 4 juice pictures. Step 2: We draw the milk row: 6 milk pictures. Step 3: We write a title on top: "Drinks We Like." Now anyone can read our graph. Say it plainly: a pictograph is the same data with pictures. One picture stands for one answer, just like one block did.

Check yourself — explain it

The concrete row has 6 cubes. How many pictures do we draw?

Paired problem — example still visible

A concrete row has 3 blocks. How many pictures go in the pictograph row? -> 3

Faded completion — last step is yours

"In a pictograph, one picture stands for one ___." -> answer
