Grade 1 › G1U14 Data: Ask, Gather, Show

GRADE 1 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G1-1ST1

L2 · Gathering answers: our class data

Learning goal

“I can ask a question, gather the answers, and check that my counts add up.”

Gather — to collect. We gather answers by asking everyone.
Data — the answers we gather.
Count — to say numbers in order to find how many.
Most — the biggest count. The group with the most has the highest number.
Worked example

Our wondering: "Which pet do you like best - cats or dogs?" Step 1: We ask EVERY kid in the class. Each kid gives one answer. Step 2: We count the cat answers one by one: 4. Step 3: We count the dog answers one by one: 6. Say it plainly: every kid answers once, and every answer gets counted.

Check yourself — explain it

Why do we count each group one by one?

Paired problem — example still visible

Votes: red 3, blue 5. How many kids voted in all? -> 8 (3 + 5)

Faded completion — last step is yours

"Yes: 6. No: 2. In all, ___ kids answered." -> 8 (6 + 2)

8 scored questions with a 3-rung hint ladder. Mastery needs 7/8 plus both gate questions.
