GRADE 1 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G1-1ST1
L1 · Wonderings: questions data can answer
Learning goal
“I can ask a wondering that our class can answer.”
Wondering — a question we want to answer, like "How many kids have a pet?"
Question — the words we ask to find something out.
Data — the answers we gather. Data helps us answer our wondering.
Count — to say numbers in order to find how many.
Worked example
Our teacher's wondering. Step 1: The wondering is: "How many kids in our class have a pet?" Step 2: It asks about OUR class. Every kid can answer it: yes or no. Step 3: We can count the answers. The count answers the wondering. Say it plainly: a good wondering asks something we can find out by asking and counting.
Check yourself — explain it
Why is this a good wondering?
Paired problem — example still visible
Is this a good wondering for our class: "How many kids like pizza?" -> Yes. We can ask the class and count the answers.
Faded completion — last step is yours
