Grade 1 › G1U12 Patterns & Cycles

GRADE 1 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G1-1P1

L5 · Cycles: seasons, day and night, life cycles

Learning goal

“I can tell what comes next in a cycle. I know a cycle goes around and around.”

Cycle — a pattern that goes around and around, in the same way, forever.
Season — one of the four parts of the year: spring, summer, fall, winter.
Life cycle — the stages a living thing goes through, again and again.
Chrysalis — the resting stage of a butterfly, after the caterpillar.
Worked example

The seasons go around in a cycle. Step 1: Start at spring. Then comes summer. Step 2: Then fall. Then winter. Step 3: After winter, the cycle does not stop - spring comes again. Say it: spring, summer, fall, winter - then spring again. Say it plainly: a cycle has no end. The last part leads back to the first part.

Check yourself — explain it

After winter, what season comes?

Paired problem — example still visible

It is summer. A family picks berries in the summer sun. Which season comes right after summer? -> Fall

Faded completion — last step is yours

"Spring, summer, ___, winter - then spring again." -> fall
