GRADE 1 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G1-1P1

L1 · The pattern core: up to four elements

Learning goal

“I can find the core - the part that repeats - in a pattern.”

Pattern — something that repeats in the same way, over and over.
Core — the part of the pattern that repeats.
Repeat — to happen again in the same way.
Part — one piece of the core, like one colour or one sound.
Worked example

Pattern: red, blue, red, blue, red, blue. Step 1: Read it slowly: red, blue - red, blue - red, blue. Step 2: The same part keeps coming back: red, blue. Step 3: Say it: the core is red, blue. The core has 2 parts. Say it plainly: the core is the smallest part that repeats to make the whole pattern.

Check yourself — explain it

Pattern: sun, moon, sun, moon. What is the core?

Paired problem — example still visible

Pattern: cat, dog, cat, dog, cat, dog. What is the core? -> Cat, dog

Faded completion — last step is yours

"Pattern: up, down, up, down. The core is ___ and ___." -> up; down
