Grade 1 › G1U12 Patterns & Cycles

GRADE 1 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G1-1P1

L4 · Same pattern, different way

Learning goal

“I can show the same pattern in a different way.”

Same pattern — the core repeats in the same way, even with new parts.
Different way — new parts or new actions, but the same core shape.
Match — two patterns match when their cores work the same way.
Worked example

Pattern 1: red, blue, red, blue. Pattern 2: clap, stomp, clap, stomp. Step 1: Find each core. Pattern 1: red, blue. Pattern 2: clap, stomp. Step 2: Give the parts letters. Red = A, blue = B: A, B. Clap = A, stomp = B: A, B. Step 3: The letter cores are the same: A, B. Say it: the two patterns are the same pattern in different ways. Say it plainly: new parts are fine. The core must work the same way.

Check yourself — explain it

How can you tell two patterns are the same pattern?

Paired problem — example still visible

Pattern 1: up, down, up, down. Use A for up and B for down. Write the pattern with letters. -> A, B, A, B

Faded completion — last step is yours

"Pattern: green, green, red, green, green, red. With letters (green = A, red = B), the core is ___, ___, ___." -> A, A, B
