GRADE 1 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G1-1P1

L2 · Extending a pattern: what comes next

Learning goal

“I can keep a pattern going. I can say what comes next.”

Extend — to keep a pattern going.
Next — the part that comes right after.
After — following; the one that comes later.
Worked example

Pattern: red, blue, red, blue, red, ___. Step 1: Find the core: red, blue. Step 2: Walk the core over the pattern: red, blue - red, blue - red, ... Step 3: The next spot is the core's second part: blue. Say it: the next part is blue. Say it plainly: do not guess. Walk the core, one part at a time.

Check yourself — explain it

How do you find what comes next?

Paired problem — example still visible

Pattern: big, small, big, small, big, ___. What comes next? -> Small

Faded completion — last step is yours

"Pattern: 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, ___. The core is 1, 2. The next number is ___." -> 2
