GRADE 1 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G1-1M1
L3 · Which covers more, which holds more: area and capacity
Learning goal
“I can tell which thing covers more. I can tell which thing holds more.”
Area — how much a thing covers.
Capacity — how much a thing holds.
Covers — spreads out over the top of something.
Holds — keeps things inside it, like water in a cup.
Worked example
A big towel and a small towel lie on a mat. Step 1: The small towel covers only part of the mat. Bits of mat still show. Step 2: The big towel covers the whole mat. No mat shows. Step 3: Say it: the big towel covers more. It has the bigger area. Say it plainly: covering is about the top of a thing, not how long it is.
Check yourself — explain it

Paired problem — example still visible
