Grade 1 › G1U11 Comparing Length & Size

GRADE 1 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G1-1M1

L1 · Longer, shorter, taller: comparing length directly

Learning goal

“I can tell which thing is longer, shorter, or taller. I line up the ends first.”

Longer — reaches farther, when the ends are lined up.
Shorter — does not reach as far, when the ends are lined up.
Taller — reaches higher, when things stand up.
Line up the ends — start both things at the same place.
Worked example

A red ribbon and a blue ribbon lie on the table. Step 1: Line up the ends. Both ribbons start at the same line. Step 2: Look at the other ends. The red ribbon reaches farther. Step 3: Say it: the red ribbon is longer. The blue ribbon is shorter. Say it plainly: always line up the ends first. Then look at who reaches farther.

Check yourself — explain it

Why do we line up the ends first?

Paired problem — example still visible

Two sticks lie side by side. Their left ends line up. The brown stick reaches farther. Which stick is longer? -> The brown stick

Faded completion — last step is yours

"Two scarves line up at the top. The green scarf hangs down farther. The green scarf is ___ and the white scarf is ___." -> longer; shorter
