Grade 1 › G1U11 Comparing Length & Size

GRADE 1 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G1-1M1

L2 · Ordering by length; height, width and depth

Learning goal

“I can put three things in order by length. I can name height, width and depth.”

Order — putting things in a line, like longest to shortest.
Height — how tall a thing is, from the bottom to the top.
Width — how wide a thing is, from one side to the other side.
Depth — how deep a thing is, from the front to the back.
Worked example

Three ribbons lie on the table: red, blue, green. Step 1: Line up all the left ends on the same line. Step 2: Look at the far ends. The red ribbon reaches farthest. Red is the longest. Step 3: The blue ribbon stops first. Blue is the shortest. Step 4: The green ribbon stops in the middle. Green goes in the middle. Say it: longest to shortest - red, green, blue. Say it plainly: order means every thing gets a place: first, middle, last.

Check yourself — explain it

The green ribbon stops in the middle. Where does it go in the order?

Paired problem — example still visible

Three strings line up at the left. String A reaches farthest. String C stops first. String B stops in the middle. Write the order from longest to shortest. -> A, B, C

Faded completion — last step is yours

"Three scarves hang from one rail. Ana's hangs lowest. Ben's hangs least. Lucy's hangs in the middle. Longest to shortest: ___, ___, ___." -> Ana's, Lucy's, Ben's
