F2 · Fraction, Division, Decimal: Three Names for One Number
“I can turn any fraction into a division, divide to find its decimal, and turn a decimal back into a fraction — and show that the fraction and the decimal sit at the same point on the number line.”
Write 3/4 as a decimal. Step 1: A fraction is a division — 3/4 means 3 ÷ 4. Step 2: 4 does not go into 3, so write 0. and keep going into tenths: 3.0 is 30 tenths. Step 3: 30 tenths ÷ 4 = 7 tenths, remainder 2 tenths; 2 tenths is 20 hundredths. Step 4: 20 hundredths ÷ 4 = 5 hundredths. So 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75. Model: a bar split into 4 equal parts with 3 shaded (3/4), beside a 0–2 number line marked in quarters where the mark for 3/4 is also labelled 0.75 — one point, two names.
Why do we write 3 as 3.0 before dividing?
Write 1/2 as a decimal. → 1 ÷ 2 = 0.5
“3/5 = 3 ÷ 5. 30 tenths ÷ 5 = 6 tenths, so 3/5 = 0.___” → 0.6
