F11 · Fractions Mixed Review: The Whole Unit, Interleaved

Learning goal

“I can choose the right fraction skill on my own. I can switch between sharing, adding, subtracting, and multiplying without being told which one to use.”

Quotient — the result of a division. A sharing share is a quotient: 3 ÷ 4 = 3/4.
Related denominators — one denominator is a multiple of the other, like 4 and 8.
Unit fraction — a fraction with numerator 1, like 1/6.
Product — the answer to a multiplication, like 4 × 2/3 = 8/3.
Worked example

5/6 − 3/4. Name the skill first: this is subtraction, so the parts must match before we subtract. 6 and 4 are not related, so use the product of the denominators: 24. 5/6 = 20/24 and 3/4 = 18/24. Subtract: 20/24 − 18/24 = 2/24 = 1/12. Model both ways: bars in twenty-fourths with the two shaded lengths compared, AND both fractions placed on a 0–2 number line in twenty-fourths, with the gap between them marked 1/12.

Check yourself — explain it

Why must both fractions be rewritten before subtracting?

Paired problem — example still visible

2/3 + 3/4 → 8/12 + 9/12 = 17/12 = 1 5/12.

Faded completion — last step is yours

7/8 − 1/4: the denominators are related, so 7/8 − 2/8 = ___. Finish the subtraction. → 5/8
