L4 · Rounding to various places, including tenths
“I can round whole numbers and decimals to a chosen place - including the tenths place - by looking at the digit next door, and explain why the rounded number is a good 'about' answer.”
Round 4,382 to the nearest hundred. The two choices are 4,300 and 4,400. The halfway point is 4,350. Look at the TENS digit (the digit right after the place you are rounding to): it is 8. 4,382 is past the halfway point, so it rounds UP to 4,400. The rule that never fails: find the place, look next door. 5 or more - round up. 4 or less - round down (the digit stays, and everything after becomes zeros).
To round 4,382 to the nearest hundred, I look at the tens digit because...
Round 6,247 to the nearest hundred -> tens digit 4 -> round down -> 6,200
"Round 91,560 to the nearest thousand: choices 91,000 and 92,000; the hundreds digit is ___, so it rounds to ___." -> 5; 92,000
