L1 · Place value: whole numbers to 1 000 000, tenths and hundredths
“I can read a place-value chart, name the place of any digit in a number up to 1 000 000, including tenths and hundredths, and say what each place is worth.”
Put 46,275.38 on the chart. Chart places, left to right: ten thousands | thousands | hundreds | tens | ones . tenths | hundredths. 46,275.38 -> 4 in ten thousands, 6 in thousands, 2 in hundreds, 7 in tens, 5 in ones, then the decimal point, 3 in tenths, 8 in hundredths. Say it plainly: the decimal point is a fence post. Whole numbers live on the left of it. Tenths and hundredths live on the right of it. Reading the number aloud: "forty-six thousand, two hundred seventy-five and thirty-eight hundredths." The word and tells your ear where the decimal point is. (In French books the same number is written 46 275,38 - a comma does the job of the point. Same number, same value.)
The first place to the right of the decimal point is...
In 8,506.29, name the place of the digit 2 and the digit 9. -> 2 is in the tenths place; 9 is in the hundredths place.
"In 730,915.62: the digit in the hundred thousands place is 7. The digit in the hundredths place is ___" -> 2
