GRADE 4 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G4-4N1

L2 · The value of each digit; composing numbers many ways

Learning goal

“I can say what each digit in a number is worth, write a number in expanded form, and build (compose) the same number in more than one way.”

Value of a digit — how much a digit is worth in its place (the 3 in 3,000 is worth 3,000).
Expanded form — a number written as the sum of the values of its digits: 4,382 = 4,000 + 300 + 80 + 2.
Compose — to build a number by putting parts together; the parts can be regrouped and the number stays the same.
Worked example

Write 4,382.56 in expanded form. Read the chart, digit by digit: 4 thousands = 4,000; 3 hundreds = 300; 8 tens = 80; 2 ones = 2; 5 tenths = 0.5; 6 hundredths = 0.06. Expanded form: 4,000 + 300 + 80 + 2 + 0.5 + 0.06. Check: adding the parts back gives 4,382.56.

Check yourself — explain it

In expanded form, the 8 in 4,382.56 is written as 80 because...

Paired problem — example still visible

Write 7,045.3 in expanded form -> 7,000 + 40 + 5 + 0.3 (the tens digit is 4 -> 40; there are 0 hundreds, so no hundreds part is written).

Faded completion — last step is yours

"9,260.14 in expanded form: 9,000 + 200 + ___ + 0.1 + 0.04" -> 60
