GRADE 2 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G2-2ST1

L4 · Reading graphs; comparing graph types: clinic

Learning goal

“I can read pictographs, bar graphs, and dot plots to answer questions, and I can tell what is the same and what is different about the three graph types.”

Title — the words at the top of a graph that tell what the graph shows.
Legend — the part of a pictograph that tells what each picture stands for. (Also called a key.)
Axis — a line on a bar graph that the bars are measured against.
Axis label — the words beside an axis that tell what the bars or numbers mean.
Worked example

Use the "Favourite Season" bar graph. Step 1: Find the tallest bar: summer, with 9 votes. Step 2: Find winter: 6 votes. Step 3: "How many more" means subtract: 9 - 6 = 3. Step 4: Summer got 3 more votes than winter. Say it plainly: read the count off the graph first; then add or subtract.

Check yourself — explain it

How do we answer "how many more votes did summer get"?

Paired problem — example still visible

Use the season graph. Fall has 5 votes and spring has 4. How many more votes did fall get? -> 1 more vote

Faded completion — last step is yours

"On the season graph: most votes - summer with ___. Fewest votes - spring with ___." -> 9; 4
