Grade 2 › G2U11 Data & Graphs

GRADE 2 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G2-2ST1

L3 · Making pictographs, bar graphs, and dot plots

Learning goal

“I can build a pictograph, a bar graph, and a dot plot from a table - with one picture, one bar step, or one dot for each item - and give my graph a title.”

Pictograph — a graph that uses pictures to show data. Each picture stands for one item.
Bar graph — a graph that uses bars to show data. Longer bars mean bigger counts.
Dot plot — a graph with dots above labels on a line. Each dot stands for one item.
Stands for — what one picture or dot means. Here, one picture stands for one student.
Worked example

Build a pictograph for books read. Title: "Books Read This Week." One star stands for one book. Step 1: Mia read 4 books - draw 4 stars beside Mia. Step 2: Sam read 6 books - draw 6 stars beside Sam. Step 3: Count the stars in each row to check against the table: 4 and 6. Now the same data as a bar graph: the bar for Mia climbs to 4, and the bar for Sam climbs to 6. The taller bar matches the bigger count. Say it plainly: one picture for one item, every time - that is what makes the graph true.

Check yourself — explain it

Why does each picture stand for exactly one book?

Paired problem — example still visible

Leo read 5 books. In the pictograph, Leo's row has ___ stars. -> 5

Faded completion — last step is yours

"A bar graph shows 7 votes. The bar must climb up to ___." -> 7
