Grade 2 › G2U11 Data & Graphs

GRADE 2 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G2-2ST1

L1 · Asking questions; collecting first-hand data

Learning goal

“I can tell a data question from a question with just one answer, and I can collect first-hand data by asking everyone in my class.”

Data — information we collect, like answers and counts.
First-hand data — data you collect yourself, by asking or counting.
Question — what we ask to start collecting data.
Collect — to gather data by asking people or counting things.
Worked example

Two questions: Question 1: "Which fruit do you like best?" Question 2: "What colour is Ana's shirt?" Step 1: Question 1 is answered by asking MANY people. The answers can be different - apple, banana, grapes. Step 2: Question 2 has just one answer. You can find it by looking. Step 3: Question 1 is a data question. Question 2 is not. Say it plainly: a data question is answered by collecting answers from many people, and the answers can be different.

Check yourself — explain it

Why is "Which fruit do you like best?" a data question?

Paired problem — example still visible

Is "How many pencils are in my desk?" a class data question? -> No - it has one answer; you just count the pencils in one desk

Faded completion — last step is yours

"A data question is answered by asking ___ people, and the answers can be ___." -> Many; different
