GRADE 2 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G2-2N1
L3 · The < and > signs
Learning goal
“I can use the < and > signs to show which number is greater or less.”
Greater than sign (>) — the sign that means "is greater than." Its open side faces the greater number.
Less than sign (<) — the sign that means "is less than." Its point faces the number that is less.
Sign sentence — a comparison written with a sign, like 8 < 13, read in words.
Worked example
Write a sign sentence for 7 and 4. Step 1: Compare first, sign second: 7 is greater than 4. Step 2: The > sign opens wide toward the greater number and points at the number that is less. Step 3: 7 > 4, read aloud: "7 is greater than 4."
Check yourself — explain it
In 9 > 5, why does the open side face 9?
Paired problem — example still visible
Write the sign: 12 ___ 8. -> > (12 is greater than 8).
Faded completion — last step is yours
"The sign in 15 ___ 9 opens toward 15, so the sign is ___." -> >
