GRADE 2 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G2-2N1

L2 · Comparing quantities: greater than, less than, equal to

Learning goal

“I can compare two numbers and say greater than, less than, or equal to.”

Compare — to look at two amounts and say how they match up.
Greater than — more than. 47 is greater than 35.
Less than — fewer than. 35 is less than 47.
Equal to — exactly the same amount. 24 is equal to 24.
Worked example

Compare 47 and 35. Step 1: Look at the tens first. 47 has 4 tens; 35 has 3 tens. Step 2: 4 tens is more than 3 tens, and the ones cannot change that. Step 3: 47 is greater than 35.

Check yourself — explain it

Why do we look at the tens first?

Paired problem — example still visible

Compare 63 and 58. -> 63 is greater (6 tens beat 5 tens).

Faded completion — last step is yours

"Compare 82 and 79. Tens: 8 and 7. So 82 is ___ than 79." -> greater
