GRADE 2 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G2-2N1
L3 · Partitioning a set: sharing and grouping, with or without remainders
Learning goal
“I can split a set of objects by sharing or by grouping, and say what is left over.”
Partition — to split a set of objects into smaller groups.
Share — to deal a set out equally, one at a time, into groups.
Group — to build sets of a chosen size from a larger set.
Worked example
Share 13 crackers between 2 friends. Step 1: Deal one at a time: friend, friend, friend, friend... The piles grow together. Step 2: The piles stop at 6 and 6. One cracker is still in the bowl. Step 3: Placing it would break the equal piles, so it is left over. Each friend gets 6, with 1 left over.
Check yourself — explain it
