L2 · Even or odd? Grouping by 2s and remainders

Learning goal

“I can tell if a number is even or odd by making groups of 2 and checking what is left over.”

Pair — two things that belong together, like a pair of socks.
Left over — what remains after groups are made, when it cannot fill a whole group.
Worked example

Put 14 socks into pairs. Step 1: Match the socks two at a time: pair, pair, pair... Step 2: Count the pairs: 7 pairs, and every sock is in a pair. Step 3: None is left over. 14 is even.

Check yourself — explain it

14 is even. Why?

Paired problem — example still visible

Put 18 counters in groups of 2. -> 9 groups, none left over. 18 is even.

Faded completion — last step is yours

"12 cubes in groups of 2 make ___ groups. Left over: 0. So 12 is ___." -> 6; even
