GRADE 2 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G2-2N1

L1 · Even or odd? Sharing into two equal groups

Learning goal

“I can tell if a number is even or odd by sharing counters into two equal groups.”

Even — a number that shares into two equal groups with none left over.
Odd — a number that shares into two equal groups with 1 left over.
Equal groups — groups that have exactly the same number in each group.
Worked example

Mia and Sam share 12 counters, one at a time, back and forth. Step 1: Keep dealing until every counter is on a mat: 1 for Mia, 1 for Sam, and so on. Step 2: Count each mat: Mia has 6 and Sam has 6. The groups are equal. Step 3: No counter is left over. 12 is even.

Check yourself — explain it

Paired problem — example still visible
