GRADE 2 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-MAT2-N1
L4 · Counting clinic: mixed skip-count challenges
Learning goal
“I can pick the right skip count, find missing landings, and solve mixed counting challenges.”
Count on — to keep counting from a landing you are given, instead of starting back at 0.
Step size — how much each jump adds. The step size is found from the first two landings.
Sequence — a list of landings in counting order.
Missing landing — a number in a sequence that has been left blank to find.
Worked example
Complete the sequence: 36, 46, ___, ___. Step 1 (find the step): 46 - 36 = 10. The step size is 10. Step 2 (check the step stays): counting by 10s keeps the ones digit at 6. Step 3 (count on): 46 + 10 = 56; 56 + 10 = 66. Say it plainly: in a clinic challenge, never guess the step - pull it out of the first two landings.
Check yourself — explain it
I find the step size from the first two landings because...
Paired problem — example still visible
Complete: 12, 14, ___, ___ -> 16, 18 (step 2)
Faded completion — last step is yours
"Step first: 70, 90, ___. The step is 20, so the next landing is ___" -> 110
