GRADE 2 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-MAT2-N1
L1 · Skip counting by 2s and 10s from any number
Learning goal
“I can skip count by 2s and by 10s, starting at any number.”
Skip counting — counting by jumping over numbers in a steady pattern, like 2, 4, 6, 8.
Count by 2s — counting where each number is 2 more than the one before.
Count by 10s — counting where each number is 10 more than the one before.
Pattern — the steady rule a count follows. In counting by 2s, the rule is "+2 every time."
Worked example
Count by 2s from 13: 13, 15, ___, ___. Step 1 (the rule): each new number is the one before it + 2. Step 2 (hop): 13 + 2 = 15; 15 + 2 = 17; 17 + 2 = 19. Step 3 (the pattern): starting on an odd number, every landing number stays odd. Say it plainly: the start can be any number. The +2 jump never changes.
Check yourself — explain it
