GRADE 2 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-MAT2-N1

L3 · Counting money: coins and bills of the same kind

Learning goal

“I can find the value of a group of coins or bills that are all the same kind, by skip counting.”

Dime — a coin worth 10 cents, written 10¢. Dimes are counted by 10s.
Quarter — a coin worth 25 cents, written 25¢. Quarters are counted by 25s.
Loonie — a coin worth 1 dollar, written $1. A toonie is worth $2.
Value — how much a group of coins or bills is worth altogether.
Worked example

Find the value of 4 dimes. Step 1 (name the coin's value): one dime is worth 10¢, so we count by 10s. Step 2 (touch and count): one count per coin - 10, 20, 30, 40. Step 3 (state the value): 4 dimes are worth 40¢. Say it plainly: the coin tells the step. Dimes say "count by 10s"; quarters say "count by 25s."
