GRADE 2 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-MAT2-N1
L5 · Counting within 1000 by 1s: forward and backward
Learning goal
“I can count forward and backward by 1s from any number within 1000.”
Forward — counting in the order 1, 2, 3, ... toward bigger numbers.
Backward — counting in the reverse order, toward smaller numbers.
Before — the number right in front: 299 comes just before 300.
After — the number right behind: 301 comes just after 300.
Worked example
Count on from 296: 296, 297, 298, 299, ___, ___. Step 1 (the ones flip): 297, 298, 299 - the ones digit climbs 7, 8, 9. Step 2 (the hundred flips): after 299, the ones run out. A new hundred starts: 300. Step 3 (keep going): after 300 comes 301. Say it plainly: 299 is the last number of the 200s. The number after it opens the 300s: 300.
