Grade 2 › G2U01 Numbers to 1000: Place Value

GRADE 2 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-MAT2-N1

L2 · Place value: hundreds, tens, and ones

Learning goal

“I can name the hundreds, tens, and ones places, and say what each digit is worth.”

Place value — the value a digit gets from its place in a number.
Hundreds place — the third place from the right. A digit there is worth that many hundreds.
Tens place — the middle place in a 3-digit number. A digit there is worth that many tens.
Ones place — the first place from the right. A digit there is worth that many ones.
Worked example

Take apart 472. Step 1 (name the places): from the right - 2 is in the ones place, 7 is in the tens place, 4 is in the hundreds place. Step 2 (name each value): the 4 is worth 400 (4 flats), the 7 is worth 70 (7 rods), the 2 is worth 2 (2 cubes). Step 3 (check by building): 400 + 70 + 2 = 472. The parts add back to the whole number. Say it plainly: a digit's value is the digit times the value of its place. Place first, digit second.

Check yourself — explain it

The 7 in 472 is worth 70 because...

Paired problem — example still visible

In 835, what is the value of the digit 3? -> 30 (tens place: 3 x 10)

Faded completion — last step is yours

"In 591, the 9 is in the tens place, so its value is 9 x 10 = ___" -> 90
