GRADE 2 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-MAT2-N1

L4 · Numbers on the number line

Learning goal

“I can find and name numbers on a number line to 1000.”

Number line — a line with numbers placed in counting order, each at its own point.
Point — the exact spot on the number line where a number lives.
Mark — a tick on the number line. Each mark stands for a number.
Halfway — exactly in the middle between two numbers.
Worked example

Find 600 on the number line. Step 1 (read the marks): the line runs 0, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000 - one mark for each hundred. Step 2 (count the marks): counting marks from 0 - 100 is the 1st mark, 200 the 2nd, and 600 is the 6th mark. Step 3 (one point per number): 600 lives at exactly that mark, nowhere else. Say it plainly: on a hundred-mark line, count marks like counting by hundreds.

Check yourself — explain it

Each number has exactly one point on the number line because...

Paired problem — example still visible

Which hundred mark is just before 900? -> 800 (one hundred mark back: 900 - 100)

Faded completion — last step is yours

"The marks go 0, 100, 200, ___, 400. The missing mark is ___" -> 300
