L4 · Adding with the balance
Learning goal
“I can use a balance to show that two sums are equal.”
Balance — a tool with two sides that can tip or stay flat.
Equal — the same amount.
Level — flat, not tipped to one side.
Worked example
Left side of the balance: 6 + 4 counters. Right side: 10 counters. Add the left side: 6 + 4 = 10. Both sides are 10, so the balance stays level. Say it plainly: a balance stays level when both sides are equal.
Check yourself — explain it
The balance stays level when...
Paired problem — example still visible
Left side: 8 + 2. Right side: 5 + 5. 8 + 2 = 10 and 5 + 5 = 10. -> Level - both sides are 10
Faded completion — last step is yours
"7 + 3 = 10. 9 + 1 = ___. Both sums are ___." -> 10; equal
