GRADE 1 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G1-1N2
L2 · Counting on to add
Learning goal
“I can start at the bigger number and count on to add.”
Count on — start at one number and count up.
Number line — a line of numbers in order.
Bigger number — the number we start from when we count on.
Worked example
8 + 3 on the number line. Start at 8. Hop 3 times: 9, 10, 11. Land on 11. 8 + 3 = 11. Say it plainly: the first number tells where to stand. The second number tells how many hops.
Check yourself — explain it
We start at 8 because...
Paired problem — example still visible
9 + 2: start at 9, hop 2 - 10, 11. -> 11
Faded completion — last step is yours
"7 + 3: start at 7, hop 3 - 8, 9, ___" -> 10
