GRADE 1 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G1-1N2
L3 · Breaking apart numbers to add
Learning goal
“I can break a number apart to make a ten, then add.”
Break apart — split a number into two parts.
Make a ten — add to reach 10 first.
Part — a smaller piece of a number.
Worked example
9 + 5. The ten frame has 9 dots and 1 empty space. Move 1 dot from the 5 to fill the frame. Now the frame is 10, and 4 dots are left. 10 + 4 = 14. 9 + 5 = 14. Say it plainly: a full ten is easy to add. Move just enough dots to fill the frame.
Check yourself — explain it
We move 1 dot to the 9 to...
Paired problem — example still visible
8 + 5: move 2 dots to fill the frame. 10 + 3 = 13
Faded completion — last step is yours
"9 + 6: move 1 dot - 10 + ___ = ___" -> 10 + 5 = 15
