GRADE 1 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G1-1N1

L5 · More, less, or equal: using = and ≠

Learning goal

“I can compare two numbers and write = or ≠ to show what I found.”

Equal sign (=) — the sign that says two numbers are the same: 5 = 5.
Not equal sign (≠) — the sign that says two numbers are not the same: 5 ≠ 8.
More — the bigger number when two numbers are compared.
Less — the smaller number when two numbers are compared.
Worked example

Compare 6 and 6. Which sign fits? Step 1: Look at the two numbers: 6 and 6. Step 2: They are the same number. Step 3: Same numbers take the equal sign: 6 = 6.
