Grade 1 › G1U03 Comparing Quantities & Sharing Fairly

GRADE 1 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G1-1N1

L1 · Seeing quantities to 10 at a glance

Learning goal

“I can look at a small group of dots and say how many, without counting every dot.”

Ten frame — a box with two rows of five spaces. Dots go in the spaces.
Quick look — seeing how many without counting one by one. (Teachers call this subitizing.)
Pattern — dots placed in a way your eyes can learn, like the dots on a die.
Worked example

A ten frame has 5 dots on the top row and 2 dots on the bottom row. How many dots? Step 1: The top row is full. A full row is 5. Step 2: There are 2 more dots below. Step 3: 5 and 2 more makes 7. Say it: "Five and two more is seven." No counting needed. Model: the ten frame described in words - two rows of five boxes, top row full, two boxes filled below.

Check yourself — explain it

How did you know it was 7 so fast?

Paired problem — example still visible
