GRADE 1 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G1-1N1
L4 · Sharing and grouping: the number stays the same
Learning goal
“I can share things fairly into groups, and I know the number stays the same.”
Share — give the same number to each group, one at a time: one for you, one for you.
Group — a set of things put together, like a pile or a bowl.
Fair — every group gets the same number.
Stays the same — moving things around does not make more or fewer of them.
Worked example
Share 6 counters between 2 bowls, the same in each bowl. Step 1: Deal one by one: one in this bowl, one in that bowl, and keep going. Step 2: Each bowl ends with 3 counters. Step 3: Count them all: 3 and 3 makes 6. Sharing did not change the number - still 6 in all.
Check yourself — explain it
We moved the counters into bowls. Did the number change?
Paired problem — example still visible
Share 8 counters between 2 plates, the same on each plate. How many on each plate? -> 4
Faded completion — last step is yours
"Share 4 counters between 2 cups: ___ in each cup. In all, still ___." -> 2; 4
