Learning goal

“I can calculate gross pay when hours are split into regular and overtime tiers (time and a half, double time), and when pay includes commission (single rate, or base wage plus commission), piecework, tips, bonuses or shift premiums.”

Overtime — hours beyond the regular threshold (often 40 per week), paid at a higher rate: time and a half = 1.5 x the wage; double time = 2 x the wage.
Commission — pay as a percent of sales: commission = rate x total sales. It may be the whole pay or added to a base wage.
Piecework — pay per item produced, picked or completed: gross = rate per item x number of items.
Shift premium — an extra amount per hour for less-desired shifts (for example nights), added to the base wage; a bonus is a lump-sum extra, and tips are extra amounts given by customers.
Worked example

Noah earns $18/h. His employer pays time and a half for hours beyond 40 in a week. Noah works 44 hours. Find his gross pay. Step 1: Split the hours: 40 regular hours and 44 - 40 = 4 overtime hours. Step 2: Overtime rate = 1.5 x 18 = $27/h. Step 3: Regular pay = 40 x 18 = $720. Overtime pay = 4 x 27 = $108. Step 4: Gross pay = 720 + 108 = $828. Pay table: Regular 40 x $18 = $720; Overtime 4 x $27 = $108; Gross $828. Say it plainly: overtime re-prices ONLY the extra hours. The first 40 stay at the base rate; the premium applies to the hours past the threshold.

Only the hours past 40 earn time and a half because...

Paired problem — example still visible

A wage is $20/h with double time (2x) for hours past 40. A worker logs 43 hours. Gross? -> Regular 40 x 20 = 800; double-time rate 40; 3 x 40 = 120 -> $920

Faded completion — last step is yours

"38 h at $16/h plus 2 h at time and a half ($24/h): gross = (38 x 16) + (2 x ___) = 608 + ___ = $___" -> 24; 48; 656
