L1 · Wages, Salary and Contract Pay

Learning goal

“I can read a time schedule and total the hours in decimal form, calculate gross pay for an hourly wage, convert a yearly salary into monthly, weekly and biweekly pay, and state what contract pay is and how it is scheduled.”

Wage — pay per hour worked: gross pay = hourly wage x hours worked.
Salary — a fixed yearly amount, paid in equal instalments (monthly = / 12, biweekly = / 26, weekly = / 52), whatever the exact hours.
Contract pay — a fixed amount for a whole job, agreed in advance and paid on completion or in instalments.
Gross pay — the full amount earned BEFORE any deductions are taken off.
Worked example

Amara's schedule: Monday 4 h, Wednesday 5 h 30 min, Friday 6 h 15 min. Find her total time in decimal hours. Step 1: Convert each shift's minutes to a decimal part of an hour: 30 min = 30/60 = 0.5 h; 15 min = 15/60 = 0.25 h. Step 2: The shifts are 4 h, 5.5 h, 6.25 h. Step 3: Total = 4 + 5.5 + 6.25 = 15.75 h. On the pay table: Mon 4 h 0 min -> 4.00; Wed 5 h 30 min -> 5.50; Fri 6 h 15 min -> 6.25; total 15.75. Say it plainly: minutes are sixtieths of an hour, not hundredths. The decimal part is minutes / 60 - never the minutes copied after the point.

Paired problem — example still visible

Total these shifts in decimal hours: 7 h 30 min and 8 h 45 min. -> 7.5 + 8.75 = 16.25 h

Faded completion — last step is yours

"5 h 30 min + 4 h 15 min: decimals are 5.5 and ___; total = ___ h" -> 4.25; 9.75
