L5 · Recall: multiplication facts with factors to 10 and related division facts; problem clinic

Learning goal

“I can recall multiplication facts with factors to 10 and the related division facts - and for the tricky facts, I can build the answer from an anchor fact I know. I can choose multiplication or division to solve a problem.”

Recall — to say a fact's answer right away, without counting: 7 × 7 = 49.
Anchor fact — a fact you know cold, used to build a tricky one: 5 × 8 = 40 anchors 6 × 8.
Related division fact — the division in the same family: 6 × 7 = 42 gives 42 ÷ 6 = 7 and 42 ÷ 7 = 6.
Worked example

6 × 7. Anchor to the 5s fact you know: 5 × 7 = 35. One more group of 7: 35 + 7 = 42. So 6 × 7 = 42. The rule: 6 × anything = 5 × anything + one more group. Two more anchors: 7 × 8 - double 7 × 4: 28 doubled is 56 (or anchor 5 × 8 = 40, plus 2 × 8 = 16, total 56). And 6 × 8 = 5 × 8 + 8 = 40 + 8 = 48. Say it plainly: recall does not mean "no thinking." It means the path is so short and well-worn that it feels instant.

Check yourself — explain it

To build 6 × 7 from 5 × 7, why do we add 7 and not 6?

Paired problem — example still visible

6 × 9 = 5 × 9 + 9 = 45 + 9 = ___ -> 54

Faded completion — last step is yours

"7 × 7 = 5 × 7 + 2 × 7 = 35 + ___ = ___." -> 14; 49
