L2 · Multiply and divide within 100; checking with inverse operations

Learning goal

“I can multiply and divide within 100, and I can check my answer with the inverse operation - division checks multiplication, and multiplication checks division.”

Product — the result of a multiplication. In 7 × 8 = 56, the product is 56.
Quotient — the result of a division. In 56 ÷ 7 = 8, the quotient is 8.
Inverse operations — operations that undo each other. Multiplication and division are inverses.
Check — to use the inverse operation to test whether an answer is right.
Worked example

Is 7 × 8 = 56 right? Multiplication and division are a family. If 7 × 8 = 56, then the product split by one factor must give the other factor: 56 ÷ 7 = 8 and 56 ÷ 8 = 7. Both divisions land exactly, with nothing left over. The product checks out. Say it plainly: a check is not doing the problem again - it is UNDOING it.

Check yourself — explain it

Why does 56 ÷ 7 = 8 prove that 7 × 8 = 56?

Paired problem — example still visible

Check 6 × 9 = 54 with a division. -> 54 ÷ 6 = 9 (or 54 ÷ 9 = 6)

Faded completion — last step is yours

"Check 8 × 4 = 32: 32 ÷ 8 = ___" -> 4
